Welcome to my website

This site will bring you news and views from me and the campaign to retake Ludlow Constituency from the Conservatives. New features will be added all the time so please feel free to come back and see how things are developing. I am looking forward to hearing your comments on my new website.

The Conservatives took this seat from the Liberal Democrats in 2005. It will only take a 2.2% swing from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats for us to retake this constituency. With your help I intend to see that we do!

Rural Phone Box Campaign
Monday, 05 May 2008

IMGP0242 A campaigner today launched a new battle to save public phone boxes in rural areas along the border between south Shropshire and mid Wales.

Councillor Mrs Heather Kidd, the Liberal Democrat's parliamentary candidate for Ludlow and Bridgnorth, said the loss making boxes provided an essential service. BT is considering the future of a number of telephone boxes which are infrequently used. They say that increased mobile phone use has rendered large numbers of the boxes as obsolete.

But Councillor Kidd responded angrily saying that she was concerned that these boxes would be removed irrespective of the needs of the communities.

She said it was a triple whammy for rural areas which were already threated with the closure of post offices and the amalgamation of schools.

Councillor Kidd said: "I understand that BT have a business to run but their charter also requires that they provide a public service.

"Most of these boxes are in very rural locations. One good example is Rorrington, in my ward. There the mobile signal is indifferent to say the least. If there are no telephone boxes and you have not got a mobile signal then how can you call for help in an emergency?"

Councillor Peter Phillips, who represents Bishop's Castle and campaigned strenuously against the last round of closures, said he hoped boxes would be saved.

The two councillors now want residents to write to BT during the consultation period with their objects.

Residents can also inform the councillors of problems with phone boxes by filing in a grumble sheet here.

Vice Chair of Governors Nikki Pugh and parent Sally Jones are seen here discussing the plight of Lydbury North with David Laws MP, Cllr Charles West and Cllr Heather Kidd.

"David Laws was interested in the Lydbury North's plight and surprised that a school with 41 on role was to be closed, especially as its numbers are not falling." Said Cllr Heather Kidd.

"This was an excellent opportunity for the school to raise the profile of this 'so called' amalgamation and it proved a very useful meeting. The governors and the community action group have until May 19th to change the County Council's mind. They are fighting for the the life of their community, for both School and Post Office. Let's hope both County and Post Office relent" concluded LibDem Heather Kidd.

Worthen Post Office Public Meeting- Villages turn out in force!
Wednesday, 23 April 2008
Worthen 119
Cllr Peter Phillips, Cllr Heather Kidd, Clare Greener, rural Policy Manager SCC, and Cllr Tim Watson at a packed public meeting in Worthen

Worthen and Brockton turned out in force tonight(Tuesday 22nd) when around 60 people packed the school hall to listen to Clare Greener, Rural Policy Manager from the County Council. She gave advice on other 'Save Our Post Office 'campaigns across the Country and where to start if the villages wanted to fight the closure.

County Cllr Peter Phillips encouraged people to lobby the Commission for Rural Communities." This Government has progressively cut business to our Post Offices". He said." There is a Rural Advocate who should be 'rural proofing' these decisions. We all need to be writing to him to save our village services".,/p>

Cllr Tim Watson who organised the meeting venue and tirelessly leafletted the community encouraged people to get involved. "This could destroy our shop as well as removing the Post Office".

Members of the public challenged to Post Offices data on the community and thought that the advice to use Bent Lont Post Office was simply not practical. "Any one knowing the area knows that there is no public transport to take us there. It is 750ft up narrow, winding lanes to reach it. In the winter you would not get there easily". Commented one member of the public.

Cllr Heather Kidd, who is one of 2 members on the District Councils Working group to fight these closures, asked for a vote on whether the community wanted to fight this closure knowing the difficulties. " They unanimously decided to fight it and around 8 people formed a fighting the closure committee. They will all meet next week to move their battle on. I am heartened to see how this brings communities together". Said Heather Kidd. " We must now make the Post Office and Government know that Shropshire communities fight hard and loudly". She added.
